    Blessed to find Hickory Hill

I feel blessed to have found Hickory Hill. This family-run home (Dee Mullens) offers compassionate, well-trained staff, excellent dementia memory care, a clean odor-free facility, delicious home-cooked meals, and plenty of activities in a peaceful rural setting - my loved one is happier and healthier. Staff went above and beyond with medical needs, PT, and transition support, and I get real peace of mind. Only gripe: communication about a roommate change was slow, but overall I highly recommend Hickory Hill.

    About Hickory Hill Retirement Community

Hickory Hill Retirement Community sits in Burkeville, Virginia, in a peaceful small town that gives folks plenty of quiet, fresh air, and green space. The place is family owned and operated and has a close-knit atmosphere where residents can choose from independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, and even rehabilitation if they need it. Folks who live there can be as independent as they want, or they can get more help as they need it, with private or semi-private rooms, nice wide-open spaces, and spring water throughout. The community's known for its clean buildings, big rooms, and home-cooked meals-three a day plus snacks-served in a pretty dining room with nice table settings and sometimes big band music playing.

You'll find all sorts of extras, like a bird aviary right in the reception area, a coffee shop, beauty and barber shop, library, and even a gift shop. The community has its own nurse and licensed staff on-site 24 hours, so help is always nearby, and there's a weekly physician visit. For folks who need special care, the memory care wing is a secured building with its own entrance, wander alert system, and staff who know how to handle things like wandering or acting out from memory problems. They work with therapy teams, doctors, and visiting healthcare providers, including dentists and podiatrists who come to the community.

People needing help with daily stuff like bathing or medication will find staff ready to help, including certified nursing assistants and a registered nurse for medication needs. The place is wheelchair accessible, with showers and full tubs that make it easier on everyone, and they're able to use mechanical lifts for transfers when needed. There's parking for residents, and they also offer rides for folks who need to get to appointments, shopping, or activities outside.

Hickory Hill has activities overseen by a full-time director, with things like ice cream socials, game nights, outings to stores and restaurants, singing, karaoke, community gardening, art, pet therapy, and even Wii bowling. Special interest clubs, brain games, devotional services, and fireside stories fill up the days, and there's even a "Neat Nails" program for grooming. Meals can be tailored for different diets, whether gluten-free, vegan, low-sodium, or low-sugar, and folks can invite guests for meals.

Residents often remark about the friendly feel and the smells from the kitchen at mealtimes, the bright, sun-filled living rooms, and plenty of cozy places to sit and visit. Memory care is carefully tailored for those who have dementia or Alzheimer's, using secure doors and alert bracelets to keep folks safe without making them feel locked in. For those looking to "age in place," Hickory Hill offers different levels of care in the same place, from more independent living all the way to skilled nursing, so people can stay as their needs change.

The community provides supportive services from Monday through Friday during office hours, and 24/7 care for those in assisted living and memory care. Hickory Hill's calming environment, active social calendar, and attentive care help folks feel at home while making sure medical and personal needs are covered, whether it's a little help with medications or more hands-on support. The peaceful setting, variety of care options, and experienced staff set the place apart for people who want comfort, company, and care in their later years.
