    Homey small community, compassionate care

I placed my mom at this small, homey senior living community and she truly flourished - tidy, spacious single room on a beautiful, southern-mansion-style campus with porch and sunset views. The homemade food and family meals were excellent, staff were kind, compassionate and responsive, and the community's low resident count meant very individualized, 24-hour/dementia and end-of-life support. It's a great value with extras included, but be aware it's rural (winter access can be tough) and we experienced occasional staffing/monitoring and administrative issues (including a deposit dispute and uneven communication). Overall my loved one was content and cared for, and I would recommend it with those reservations.

    About Havenwood

Havenwood sits in a peaceful country setting at 50 Havenwood Drive in Lexington, Virginia, and brings together a small group of only 24 residents, so the atmosphere stays quiet and the pace unhurried, and folks here tend to like that there's always enough room outside in the enclosed courtyard and inside in the common areas, but it never feels too big or too busy like those larger, noisier places, and you can tell things are done in a more personal way because each room's big and comfortable with its own private bathroom, telephone and satellite TV hookups, and emergency call system, and staff work all day and night offering three levels of care, from a little bit of help to more hands-on support, so residents can get the assistance that matches what they need, and that can mean help with dressing, bathing, walking, transfers with lifts if necessary, and mealtime support, along with diabetic care, medication management-even giving insulin-and bathroom reminders for folks who need them. The community has a unique memory care section inside its own building, completely designed for folks living with Alzheimer's or dementia, and this area stays secure, with safety bracelets and alarms if anyone tries to leave, while staff provide thoughtful help, custom care plans, structured routines, and activities that engage and gently challenge the mind, as well as help if behavioral problems come up, all in an environment meant to make people feel safe and included.

Havenwood focuses on letting folks grow older in place, so as needs change, residents don't have to move away from their familiar setting or friends, and they're able to offer several care options, including respite care for temporary stays and hospice when that becomes necessary, and the goal is always to stick with someone as their needs shift, doing their best to help people stay as long as possible in the community. Home-cooked meals, including classic comfort foods but also choices for special diets, are served daily in the dining room, which really gives people a chance to gather. Housekeeping and laundry get handled every day, so things stay tidy, and amenities like an on-site beauty shop add a touch of convenience and normalcy. There are plenty of activities that cover social, educational, and entertainment needs, and staff put effort into making life engaging and connected. Worship and spiritual support are offered both on-site and off, which matters to a lot of folks.

Safety and ease of access come first-every shower's wheelchair accessible, doors and hallways are designed for mobility, and the staff can handle most transfers, even ones where lifts are needed or two helpers must be involved. The facility takes in people who might be struggling with incontinence or even challenging behaviors, trying to look out for those who need a bit more attention. Residents get nice big private rooms where they can really settle in and feel secure, and emergency help's always close by. Because Havenwood's smaller and set well back from city noise, it feels kind of like an old family homestead, and that seems to work well for people who want to feel at peace as they age.
