    Mostly positive with cleanliness concerns

I had a mostly positive experience: the staff were genuinely friendly, caring and professional, which gave me peace of mind and a family-like atmosphere. The location is attractive, the building bright and homey with good activities, outings and private room options. Common areas felt well kept, but I noticed inconsistent cleanliness (some rooms, carpets and shared bathrooms needed better care) and occasional evening/night staffing and food quality issues. Overall I'd recommend it with reservations.

About The Mayflower by American Retirement Homes

The Mayflower by American Retirement Homes sits in the historic part of Lexington, Virginia, in a big building that used to be a grand hotel, so you'll find tall ceilings, a covered front porch where people like to sit and talk, and a welcoming lobby that feels a bit like stepping into a hotel from another time, though now it's homey and made for easy living. The place can take up to 39 residents, with a choice of private, semi-private rooms, or suites, and every room has a private bathroom, tall windows, and a call bell system. Folks spend a lot of time in the several living rooms and activity areas, like the sun-filled activity room and the large dining room where residents and guests eat home-cooked meals prepared daily, and there are snacks and drinks between meals, plus you get restaurant-style dining which is a nice treat. There's help if you need it-staff are there 24 hours a day, including nurse aides, Licensed Practical Nurses, and an activities director, and they handle things like bathing, dressing, grooming, medication management, and even feeding if someone needs it, and they're trained, kind, and have background checks. The care offered covers assisted living, adult day care, memory care for folks with dementia, home health care, nursing, rehab, and respite stays, and the memory care unit is set up to reduce confusion and keep residents from wandering.

The staff includes a consulting pharmacist and registered dietician to make sure medications and meals fit each person's needs, and there's a therapist on site too. You'll find the place is tidy with housekeeping services, basic cable, and help with laundry, and there's a maintenance director to keep everything running smoothly. They welcome pets, let folks bring a little piece of home with them, and have an elevator to get around. Safety's taken seriously with sprinklers and a call system. Social life stays active thanks to outings, group activities, church meetings, exercise, and visits from volunteers and groups like The Red Hat Society. There's a beauty salon and barbershop on site, and the front porch stays busy during nice weather when folks sit outside, talk to neighbors, or watch the seasons change. Families can visit often, and the staff hosts monthly family events to help people feel connected. Staff help with transfers, moving in, and financial guidance, and they provide a free assessment to see what kind of help someone needs. The community takes AG/Medicaid applicants.

The Mayflower has been run by American Retirement Homes, a family company, since 1984, and the people working here have years of experience. There's a family-like feeling among the residents and staff, who work together and know each other's names, keeping things neighborly and familiar. The building sits among colonial houses in a stately, quiet neighborhood close to medical resources, and transportation is available for getting to appointments or going out. The Mayflower by American Retirement Homes isn't the biggest place, so it stays intimate, which helps folks feel at home, and many residents remark on how easy it is to make friends and enjoy day-to-day activities with others.
