    Compassionate staff, clean home, worn

I'm grateful for the compassionate, friendly staff-Maxi and the director in particular-who became like family and made my mom comfortable. The home is clean and residents seemed content, but the building is worn and run-down with some uncomfortable living areas despite partial remodeling.

    About Mary Jane's Home

Mary Jane's Home is a licensed residential care home for the elderly in Newhall, CA, sitting close to medical centers, shopping, restaurants, and local attractions, so families can come by often and residents can still get out with staff help if they want to, but the home itself tries to keep things cozy, safe, and welcoming, with just six licensed beds in a family-style house where folks know each other by name and staff spend time talking and getting to know everyone. This place allows both cats and dogs, so people can have pets with them, and rooms come as semi-private or shared, with some rooms having kitchens and most common areas including private baths, wide hallways with handrails, and wheelchair accessible showers. There's an enclosed courtyard where residents can walk safely and spend time outside, plus a beauty salon, a dining hall set up like a restaurant, and a nice patio outdoors. The activity director works full-time, from what's been said, so there are always activities planned, both in the house and on trips, and everybody's encouraged to join in so they can stay active and make friends, with devotional services on site for those who want them, and a library for quiet time. The place gives both assisted living and memory care, with programs for seniors dealing with Alzheimer's or other dementia, using Wander Guard and similar systems to help those who might wander, and care plans made for each person's specific needs, so they can keep some independence but also get as much help as needed for daily tasks, whether that's bathing, meals, moving about, or taking medicines. Long-term non-acute care aims to cost less than a nursing home, and respite care is available too, so families can take a break when they need to. Nurses and trained aides provide care around the clock, including for those with diabetes, mobility problems, incontinence, or high acuity needs, and there's always a focus on treating everyone with respect and dignity, following traditional values, and helping keep families involved so residents won't feel alone. Meals are provided daily, housekeeping is done, staff speak a few languages such as Filipino, German, and Spanish, complimentary transportation makes getting to appointments easier, and emergency cords in rooms add a sense of security. The Department of Aging or other local agencies check the facility for safety and care standards, but Medicare's only accepted if the place is certified, so payment details matter. The home tries to delay or prevent nursing home placement by giving support, companionship, and therapy that help people live comfortably as long as they can, and it offers hospice support in later stages, focusing always on comfort and the quality of life, so families can feel their loved ones are cared for gently, and residents can feel at home.
