      Small, caring community; excellent care

I moved my dad in Feb and have been very pleased. It's a small, caring community with amazing individualized and end-of-life care - 1 caregiver per 2 patients, awake night staff, and long-tenured caregivers. Communication can be difficult and it's pricey, but my dad is happy and very well cared for; I highly recommend it.

      About Shalev Senior Living #2

Shalev Senior Living #2 sits in Valley Glen, CA, near Los Angeles Valley College and the Great Wall of Los Angeles, and the whole place is built for elders who want care and support in a smaller, comfortable setting that doesn't feel rushed or crowded and with a home-like feel you don't always see in bigger places. The building's modern and clean, you'll find both assisted living and independent living options, and there's a special focus on Alzheimer's Care and memory care services in their own secured part of the property so folks who wander or need extra care don't end up somewhere unsafe or confused, and staff are always nearby, any hour, with a system that alerts them if someone tries to leave or gets lost. The community only takes up to six residents, so everyone can get plenty of attention and support, and residents get help with bathing, dressing, using the restroom, medication, grooming, and daily tasks like meals and laundry, even help to the doctor or for faith outings or running errands, and there's 24/7 staff to watch out for folks who need more help, especially if they can't walk on their own or have trouble moving.

Meals come homemade three times a day, with both vegetarian and kosher choices, and cooks try to make things healthy for people with diabetes or high blood pressure, and there's special recognition for their dining program, which has won awards, just as staff have been singled out for being kind and helpful. You'll find a bright dining area, a vegetable garden everyone can work in, rooms with private baths and wheelchair-accessible showers, tubs if needed, and places inside for books, movies, and crafts, or for just sitting and talking or reading. There's an exercise room, workout programs, a swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, and plans for music therapy, pet therapy, and games so you don't get too bored or lonely, and staff keep up a schedule of different activities and community nights most weeks. People can go off-site for outings or stay put for devotional services and religious support, and there's even a traveling stylist or barber for those who want to keep up with haircuts.

Shalev Senior Living #2 can provide support for diabetes, give reminders for restroom use, help with incontinence, assist with both one-person and two-person transfers, and use lifts if someone needs that extra help getting in or out of bed, and folks needing standby help for showers or hygiene will find staff ready. People who show difficult behaviors or tend to wander have a place here, as the building's got systems and secured spaces built for safety. The care team speaks Spanish, Armenian, Filipino, and English, so residents from different backgrounds can feel at home and understood wherever possible. There's free transportation and parking for residents and their visitors, and doctors are on call to handle medical issues when needed.

Licensed by the state, Shalev Senior Living #2 delivers continuing care for different needs as people age, so folks don't have to move away if their health changes or if dementia becomes a problem. They've got a Best of Senior Living All Star award in 2024 and a Best Activities award, mostly for the mix of support, activities, and home-cooked food in a community that keeps things simple, quieter, and a little more personal than what you might get in bigger homes. Housekeeping and laundry come with the care, and residents can find both indoor and outdoor spots to relax or visit with neighbors, enjoying the comforts of a smaller care home that can meet a wide range of needs without feeling like a hospital.
