    Lovely campus, food; staffing concerns

I live at Rosewood and overall appreciate the friendly, professional staff, attractive, well-kept campus, and my spacious one-bedroom with full kitchen and a patio for my dog. The food is very good (trained chef), dining hours and in-room ordering are convenient, and there are abundant activities, pools, PT/OT, an on-site clinic and a real sense of community across independent/assisted/memory levels. My main concerns are inconsistent staffing and communication at times - pandemic shortages, some poorly trained or uncaring aides, occasional lapses in memory/skilled-nursing care - and the steep buy-in/fees. If you want great amenities, safety, and social life, it's a strong option; just be sure to get specifics on memory-care limits, staffing and costs before you commit.

    About Rosewood Retirement Community

Rosewood Retirement Community sits on an 11-acre campus near Sundale Country Club in Bakersfield, California, and has served older adults since 1974. Rosewood is a nonprofit Life Plan Community managed by HumanGood, known as the only nonprofit continuing care retirement community in Kern County, and it holds CARF-CCAC accreditation. Over 300 residents live at Rosewood, which offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and short-stay rehabilitation all in one place. The campus feels friendly and quiet, with flower gardens, trees, walking paths, and a bistro where neighbors gather and talk.

Residents can pick from studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, most with private bathrooms, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and kitchenettes. Some apartments are furnished, and all include options for television and telephone service. Independent living apartments are designed for privacy but offer easy access to meals, activities, and campus programs. The campus has various community areas like activity rooms, lounges, a library, arts and music rooms, a fitness center, a game room, a movie theater, and a resident-operated mini-mart and fountain, as well as gardens, outdoor gathering spots, and a pool.

Rosewood provides different types of care depending on what a person needs. For someone who does well on their own, independent living offers a social, active setting, with little or no extra help. Assisted Living gives help with daily tasks like dressing, bathing, or medication, and there are private living spaces for those needing support but wanting independence. The Memory Care community helps adults living with Alzheimer's or other related conditions by offering a safe environment, secure outdoor areas, and trained staff who provide close care and supervision. Skilled Nursing at Rosewood serves people who need more medical attention or help recovering after a hospital stay, and the staff attend to residents' needs at all hours.

Rosewood's dining program lets residents eat in a dining room or choose restaurant-style meals, all prepared by a professional chef who handles allergies and special diets. Community-sponsored activities include exercise classes, bingo, game nights, day and overnight trips, singing contests, and special social events. There's a business room, wellness and spa rooms, pet-friendly policies, and plenty of parking and transportation options. Services like housekeeping, laundry, move-in help, and emergency alert systems add to peace of mind, while family support services are available for loved ones.

The campus is pet-friendly, has a licensed and accredited setup, and welcomes people with a variety of care needs, offering continuity with a focus on choice, flexibility, and well-being. Staff are recognized for being kind, helpful, and present around the clock. Rosewood tries to make people feel at home, connecting new residents through social groups and daily activities, and offers shared homes for those needing caregivers. The grounds and buildings stay well kept, and the community has a small-town feeling, with neighbors who know each other and a simple way of life. Rosewood has several residency plans, including renting, and combines health care, security, and a chance for seniors to stay engaged and cared for as their needs change.
