    Compassionate staff, lovely facility, inconsistent

I'm grateful for the compassionate, attentive staff, excellent food, beautiful well-maintained facility with great views, ample parking, roomy apartments with kitchens, lots of activities and rehab/24-hour nursing available. That said, I found the administration disorganized, the place expensive, and there are privacy concerns around financial questions; dementia care and family support seem limited, the lobby and pool are small and visitor-unfriendly, and meal plans/housekeeping can be inconsistent.

About The Canterbury Retirement Community - Senior Living, Independent Living

The Canterbury Retirement Community sits in the rolling hills of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and you'll see ocean breezes and sunshine most days, which sounds nice if you like quiet afternoons or time outside, and it's a member of The Episcopal Home Communities, so you get stability and a bit of tradition. The place feels like a small neighborhood with a campus style, and it's got a Life Plan setup, which means you can choose from independent living, assisted living, continuing care, memory care, or even skilled nursing, all within the same place, and they handle short-term stays too if you're just planning to visit for a while. They say residents' individual needs come first, so there are personal care assistants, lots of health checks, and help with things like walking, dressing, bathing, and medication.

Apartments come in one or two-bedroom layouts with options for patios or balconies, and washers and dryers are available, plus the rooms have safety and handicap features, cable TV, and kitchenettes, and you get weekly housekeeping, laundry service, and dining choices that include lunch and dinner made by their own kitchen. If you want to bring a pet, cats and small dogs are welcome. The place offers a good variety of activities every week, like art studio classes, Spanish lessons, happy hours, on-site performers, water aerobics, group exercise, and there are frequent trips out for groceries, shopping, or cultural events. There's a Creative Living Academy, so anyone can learn new things or enjoy artistic pursuits, and they've got devotional services on and off-site.

For recreation, the Canterbury has an outdoor heated pool, a billiards room, a library, walking paths, and outdoor gardens and patios, and there's a beauty salon and barbershop on-site. Residents use game rooms, fitness centers, and indoor and outdoor areas to spend time as they like, and WiFi comes included, along with cable and utilities. There are security cameras at all entrances, emergency call systems in every apartment, elevators with phones, and around-the-clock security for peace of mind. Nurses stay on duty 24 hours, and staff is trained to help with Alzheimer's and memory care.

The community holds a license with the state of California-license number 191603774-with capacity for 187 residents, and accepts long-term care insurance. Transportation is offered to medical appointments within a ten-mile area, and residents can count on consistent help, whether it's medication management, dietary care, diabetes checks, or incontinence care. The culture there is described as friendly, supportive, and respectful, with services rising to meet personal needs but also encouraging as much independence as each person wants, and residents can participate in many wellness programs for fitness, yoga, and heart health. There's a rich calendar full of social, cultural, physical, and educational events, nutritious meals, and the place's long-standing focus on dignity and quality of life for all. The Canterbury stands out for being the only Life Plan community in the South Bay, offering a broad range of care options, flexible living choices, and a strong sense of hospitality in a peaceful outdoor setting.
