    Comfortable community with some shortcomings

I live in a comfortable one-bedroom with a patio near Brevard College; the grounds, pool, library and year-round programs (opera nights, guest artists, movie screenings, dog visits) give a real sense of neighborhood and peace of mind. The staff are kind, professional and often go above and beyond - maintenance and caregivers are usually quick and helpful. That said, staffing shortages, poor communication and abrupt discharges with little notice mean they can't always provide higher-level care; meal and cleaning quality have been inconsistent and extra-help fees are high. Great for independent living with lots to do and friendly neighbors, but double-check care needs and policies before committing.

    About College Walk Retirement Community

College Walk Retirement Community sits on 33 scenic acres with mountain views and lots of nature, offering independent and assisted living with studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments that range from 380 to 843 square feet, plus cottages and cluster homes for people who like more space or want a bit of privacy, so people from many backgrounds can find something that suits their needs here, and the place also has a lodge. Residents have basic utilities built into their monthly rate, except phone and cable, and they get bi-weekly housekeeping and linen service, plus apartment maintenance. The staff are friendly, supportive, and available 24/7, with licensed and certified caregivers always nearby to help with daily activities or medication management if needed, and there's a 24-hour emergency response system that gives some peace of mind. Dining happens in a shared restaurant-style dining room, with healthy dinners served and choices for up to three more meals a day, plus snacks, and there's optional medication assistance and personal care services available for those who need that extra hand. The Inn at College Walk provides options for assisted living right on campus, and the cottages are good for folks who feel more independent. The place stays busy with scheduled transportation services, apartment features like kitchens, patios, utility rooms, and lots of storage, and there are clubhouse spaces and social areas for gatherings.

Residents take part in community-centered activities, vibrant monthly events, and themed parties, like dances, bridge tournaments, regular concerts, shows, and special things like the White Squirrel Festival, and folks can read about what's happening in the community newsletter or look at the gallery. Nature trails, on-site fishing, and easy access to over 250 waterfalls and the Smoky Mountain National Park let people get outside and enjoy pretty surroundings, and there's always something going on, from wellness programs to live entertainment, group outings, or just a walk nearby. Fitness facilities exist but may be due for some updates, and the staff finds ways to keep everyone moving or engaged in activities. Transportation is arranged for group events, outings to places like the Brevard Music Center, and local shopping, so nobody has to worry about getting out and doing things on their own.

The community includes both social events and spaces for privacy, with independent and assisted living, and offers services that cover health and well-being, active living, and help for seniors with different needs, whether someone wants company, support, or just a comfortable place to live. College Walk Retirement Community is managed by Brightspace and is a licensed and certified community, always focused on keeping life active, safe, and enjoyable for all who call it home, and while some areas like the fitness room might need a little updating, the overall feeling is welcoming, comfortable, and full of opportunities for people to feel part of a close neighborhood.
