    Caring staff; safety, cost issues

My mom lived here for two years before she passed; the place is beautiful, immaculately clean, and the apartments are comfortable with good amenities. The staff-RNs/LPNs/CNAs and dining attendants-are overwhelmingly friendly, long-tenured and caring, and rehab/medical support was excellent. Biggest negatives were declining meal quality and limited choices, rising cost/affordability issues, and troubling staffing shortages/memory-care lapses that led to safety incidents. Overall I'm grateful for the caring team but cautious because of safety and cost concerns.

    About King's Grant Retirement Community

King's Grant Retirement Community, also known as King's Grant (C0022), sits on over 120 acres in Martinsville, Virginia, and offers a quiet place full of lakes, streams, and walking trails, where you'll often see residents walking or just enjoying the green space and nature all around. James Souter, the Executive Director, leads a staff known for being caring and efficient, always paying attention to what the residents really need. The community operates as a not-for-profit Life Plan Community, which means it covers many levels of care on one campus-independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehab, and memory care-all based on a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) model with a one-time entrance fee and monthly fees that depend on care level.

You'll find different choices for living, like cottages, apartments, and patio homes in several floor plans, and residents are encouraged to make these spaces their own. The community has a Village area with cottages and patio homes, as well as apartments in the Residential Center, and skilled nursing care is available at the Lacy Health & Rehab Center, which has received high marks for quality. For dining, you've got The Trellis Dining Room offering a flex meal plan with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Francks' Place, which is a casual café with indoor/outdoor seating and a bar. There's also a private dining room for small family functions, and the chefs there cater those events.

Daily life at King's Grant centers around opportunities for staying active and connected. There's a Broaddus-Vitality Center-with exercise classes, an indoor heated pool for swimming or water exercise, a spa, group wellness programs, and even massage therapy-that helps residents keep moving and social. Wellness coordinators help set up individualized exercise plans, and there are land and water classes like aqua aerobics, strength and stretch, functional water exercise, and swimming, plus bocce ball, gardening, and a lake and wooded trails for more quiet strolls. The activities calendar covers everything from resident-led art and book clubs, bridge, Mahjong, woodworking, and gardening, to canoeing, biking, hiking, and golf. The clubhouse and Francks' Place Café give people places to socialize or share coffee in the morning, and continuing education classes, lectures, and special studies keep things interesting for those who like to learn new things.

For care, King's Grant covers different needs as they come up, with on-site skilled nursing, assisted living, Catered Living, memory care, and therapy services. Memory care serves residents with Alzheimer's and other memory problems, and skilled nursing and rehab are available in the Lacy Health & Rehab Center. Outpatient therapy services connect to Summit Square, which is one of the three campuses that make up Sunnyside Communities, including Sunnyside and Summit Square in Waynesboro, which has small-town charm. Residents have access to health care staff including registered nurses, medication administration, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. There are 24-hour emergency response systems, regular health checks, and services like laundry, three meals a day, housekeeping, cable TV, phone service, security, trash pickup, and transportation for shopping or appointments.

Amenities and features make day-to-day life easier and more comfortable, with everything from arts and crafts rooms and a library, to outdoor walking paths, gardening areas, on-site dining, and pet-friendly options. Volunteers and resident-led groups play a big part in making the community feel supportive and connected. They offer services and activities designed to help everyone feel included, safe, and engaged. The community also has specialized names for their wellness programs and areas, like the Broaddus-Vitality Center and Francks' Place. Funding options include private funds, long-term care insurance, private health insurance, and veterans' benefits. Residents can choose private rooms and enjoy the freedom to keep pets. With more than 113 years of service, King's Grant stands out for its supportive environment, attention to residents' well-being, and variety of care and programs in a Christian setting, surrounded by lakes and green fields that make the campus both peaceful and inviting. Virtual tours and area attraction trips help keep the community lively and connected to the broader world outside the gates.
