    Beautiful facility, uneven clinical care

I moved in and loved the spotless, well-appointed facility, beautiful dining, varied activities, friendly staff, and convenient location - my apartment and the grounds are fantastic. That said, clinical care felt uneven: I witnessed falls, slow responses, nonchalant nursing at times, and inconsistent therapy/scheduling. It's high-end and expensive; great if you can afford it, but be aware of safety and communication concerns.

About Brandon Oaks Life Plan Community

Brandon Oaks Life Plan Community sits in a quiet area near downtown Roanoke, close to places like the Roanoke City Market, Taubman Museum, Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Roanoke, where residents can get out and enjoy what the city has to offer, and people here find many ways to keep their lives full, whether by joining planned social events, resident-led groups, wellness classes, or just chatting in the café or lounge. The staff provide help with things like medication management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, and there's a team ready at all hours for both medical and daily needs, with specialized staff for hospice, memory support, and rehabilitation. Brandon Oaks offers different places to live, from studio apartments up to two-bedroom units, most with private bathrooms, walk-in closets, kitchenettes, patios, or balconies, and there are emergency call systems in place along with safety and fire features to keep folks safe.

People who want to bring pets can do that, too, and they even have pet therapy programs, which people seem to enjoy, and residents don't have to worry about keeping up with home repairs or chores since that's all taken care of in the monthly fee. There are several dining venues, including restaurant-style dining, a residents' lounge, an auditorium, and ongoing updates to help more people feel welcome, and The Oaks Club and other community spaces give people the chance to meet new friends and try social activities. There's a wellness center, an indoor pool, beauty and barber services, elevators, transportation for outings and appointments, along with options for educational events and cultural activities.

The health care side is set up for different needs, so people can get support through independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, long-term care, rehab care, home health services, and even adult day care, and the 5-star rated nursing and rehab center is open to both residents and the public for acute and respite care beds. Medical services go beyond the basics, since they include things like a hospital, a medical clinic, emergency care, surgery, obstetrics, outpatient procedures for both short and long term, and comprehensive hospice care-so even as health needs change, you don't have to move elsewhere or pay higher monthly fees.

Volunteers, managed by coordinators like Alexa Mower, give their time to support special activities, grief counseling, community education, and help residents stay connected or find companionship, and Brandon Oaks aims to build a sense of belonging and well-being for everyone. The Pines is their newest neighborhood, and as the community grows, they keep adding more areas for active seniors to connect and find purpose, all under the non-profit guidance of Virginia Lutheran Homes. People say that life here is about having choices, with enough activities and support to let someone be as busy or relaxed as they want, and for those needing extra help, the care team is always ready. Facility tours are available if you want to see things for yourself, meet the staff, and find out what daily living at Brandon Oaks Life Plan Community is like.
