Gypsy Hill Place sits inside a renovated historic high school, and you can find a nice mix of old charm and new features, with each studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartment looking a little different from the next, tall ceilings and big windows bringing in lots of light, and full-size kitchens plus washers and dryers in each unit so folks don't have to share-there's also window treatments, individual heating and cooling, emergency call systems, high-definition cable TV, local phone service, and internet included. Folks who use wheelchairs can find units made for easier use, and showers to match, with help available for lifting, self-medication, and homecare right on site if needed, as well as regular housekeeping services. Both men and women can live here, with the option for female-only housing if someone prefers, and pets are allowed, although no one can smoke indoors anywhere. Seniors age 55 and over can choose independent living or go for assisted living or Alzheimer's care, with levels of care that can increase as people's needs change-respite care is also available. The staff have training and seem friendly, with a nurse, doctor, podiatrist, dentist, and therapy services all on call or on site, and there's complimentary transportation for errands or appointments plus plenty of offsite activities offered. There's a restaurant-style dining room for meals, a beauty salon and barber service, resident parking, and a full calendar of social, educational, and entertainment programs like pub room events, musical performances, and games in the activity room. Residents can be active with Tai Chi or chair yoga classes, while those who like to garden can use the raised beds or spend time tending flowers near the patio. Community life brings devotional services, onsite worship, and programs that support friendships and high quality of life, along with onsite activities and regular social events. Folks that want quiet time have a library, games room, communal TV lounge, and a room with a piano, while many enjoy the outdoor patio for music drifting over from Staunton Park or the chance to join barbecue picnics. The management tries to keep things safe, though they do admit there are some concerns about the stairs, railings, and windows, but overall folks seem to look out for each other. There's a no-smoking policy indoors, but the grounds make for pleasant walks, and some will enjoy complimentary tickets to local ShenanArts shows. The place has a variety of amenities right outside your apartment and runs its own website along with listings on VirginiaNavigator, SeniorNavigator, and other directories, and you can find a large online library with education and resource links if you want to know more about local or even national programs.
Bright units, dingy building, mixed
I toured this apartments-only senior community and came away mixed. Positives: bright rooms, high ceilings and nice layouts, lots of plants and gardening activities, friendly residents, decent meals, bus service and reasonable rates. Negatives: building feels old/dingy and poorly renovated, front views are nice but rear are depressing, apartments are very small with inadequate washer/dryer and sealed windows, and there are maintenance/safety issues (stairs, railings). Office was often locked, staff rarely visible during my visit, and there's no assisted-living care-so I wouldn't trust it for my mother who needs help, though it may work for independent seniors on a budget.
