    Warm staff, peaceful, cramped, pricey

I moved my wife into this small, beachside memory-care community and overall I'm glad we did. The staff are warm, attentive and informative - personal, accommodating caregivers, excellent hospice support, wonderful chefs, lots of activities, a lovely garden and even music again. The facility is pretty, clean and peaceful with a good staff-to-resident ratio and real expertise in dementia care, which gave us peace of mind. Downsides: rooms are cramped, limited personalization, the building feels dated and pricey, and I did worry about safety (open patio doors and occasional slow communication). Despite that, I would recommend families consider it.

    About Sun and Sea

Sun and Sea sits in a quiet San Diego neighborhood, a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean, in a mature garden with tall trees and lots of flowers, and you'll see that all the living and social spaces are bright and open with many windows-there's an airy garden room full of sunlight, a cozy living room with a fireplace and a piano, and a dining room where everyone eats three nutritious, home-cooked meals, and snacks and drinks are always available during the day, and meals are both flavorful and fresh. Residents can enjoy lush gardens, outdoor shade spots, walking paths, and a gated courtyard where everything's on one level and easy to get around, and there's plenty of space both inside and out to sit with friends or family, play games, or spend time with pets. Family can join for meals and activities, and the calendar is packed with music, laughter, BINGO, holiday and special events, and entertainers who come by each week, so folks always have something to look forward to, and the activities keep people's minds and spirits active.

Sun and Sea gives care and support to both men and women, and focuses on residential memory care, assisted living, and respite care, with staff trained to help people dealing with Alzheimer's or dementia, and the LEGACY™ Brain Health program offers a focus on brain health, sleep, and diet, while the Growing Eden program encourages connection with nature and gardening, and care plans are made just for each resident. Nurses, physical therapists, podiatrists, and hospice services are all available, and there's always a nurse on call, plus full-time housekeeping, a chef, and a wellness coordinator. The staff forms close bonds with residents, showing patience and kindness, and the place runs on a culture of love and respect, making sure everyone feels at home and safe. Social and devotional programs happen on site, and there's a focus on helping residents age in place, with care for changing needs and support for caregivers too, and guidance on when memory care might be right, and even information about veterans' and tax benefits for families.

The whole community is secure, with a locked perimeter and systems in place to keep residents safe, especially those with memory loss, and indoor and outdoor areas are all accessible, with showers and parking designed for wheelchairs and walkers. Residents can bring pets, visit the salon or barber, and take part in a wide range of physical, social, and mental activities that take place every day of the week, and the staff is awake and ready to help at any hour, always focused on making life comfortable, familiar, and friendly for everyone living there.

Sun and Sea is connected to messaging and social media, managing Facebook accounts and letting families stay informed, and the facility offers lots of resources-about brain health, tax help, and memory care decisions, with testimonials to share what life is like there. The staff aims to give everyone a sense of purpose, encourage laughter, help with spiritual and artistic needs, and build a cheerful, calm home where people can enjoy each day, connected to both nature and a caring community.
