    Excellent therapy but inconsistent care

I had a mixed experience at Berkshire. The rehab team, many nurses and aides were fantastic - caring, professional, clean, and made the place feel like home with activities and acceptable meals. But I also encountered rude or untrained staff, poor communication about meds and discharge, safety and cleanliness lapses (falls, soiled rooms), and troubling hospice/management issues. Overall, excellent therapy and many amazing staff, but inconsistent care and management mean you need to stay vigilant.

About Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center

Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center sits on Clearview Drive in Vinton, Virginia, right near the Vinton Library, and with 180 licensed beds, it serves as a skilled nursing facility focusing on both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. This place stands out because almost 90% of their patients who come in for high-intensity therapy or skilled nursing care go home within 30 days, and they say that over 98% of patients get this kind of care, which is something you don't see everywhere. The center has private and semi-private room options, both with their own bathrooms and either a shower or tub, and you'll find the rooms have plenty of space and comfort to help recovery along. There's an emphasis on individualized care, so staff tailor care and therapy to each patient's health needs, using unique tools like a Recovery Map™ and a Personal Report Card™ to keep track of progress each day.

The place has a big focus on therapy and rehab, especially short-term recovery after surgery, illness, or things like stroke, knee, or hip surgery, with the specialized LifeWorks Rehab® program offering therapy up to seven days a week for two to three hours a day if it's needed. The team includes skilled doctors, nurses, certified nursing assistants, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapists, and everyone works together under one roof-these are not contractors, but a dedicated staff. You'll also find an activities coordinator, and the center keeps things active and engaging for the patients.

Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center is a proprietary facility, which means it's privately owned, with Christina Wiley listed as the administrator, but another note mentions Jessica Jackson in that role, so folks may want to double-check who's currently in charge. It's affiliated with Medical Services of America. There's a state-of-the-art gym, plus therapy equipment like the Alter-G treadmill, Rifton TRAM, HUR iBalance machine, dynamic stair trainer, and traditional strength training equipment, which can help people regain mobility and independence. Therapy and care can be delivered every day of the week, and there's restaurant-style dining with a variety of meal choices, giving the common dining room a welcoming feel.

The staff aims for quick and productive recoveries, and their focus on customer service and patient satisfaction shows up in their performance above industry standards. They track how efficiently and productively they care for folks, always looking for better results. Private daily room rates are $314, and semi-private are $299, so costs are pretty clear. The whole place works within a fiscal year starting July 1, 2022, and ending June 30, 2023, which folks paying attention to budgets might find helpful. Right now, Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center isn't taking new patients.

Everyone speaks English, and while there aren't specific specialties mentioned, they offer care for many different recovery needs with a team that includes culinary staff and a dietitian to help with nutritional needs. The environment feels home-like while supporting the safety and health of residents, with community support and a caring staff who pay close attention.
