    Compassionate care but facility concerns

I have mixed feelings about this small Alzheimer's-focused home. The staff are loving, respectful and hardworking - they made residents feel like family, ran engaging activities, kept a peaceful garden and provided true 24/7 dementia support. However, the facility is dated and small (bare rooms, odd smells), staffing is thin in evenings with no on-site nurse, communication with families can be poor, and meals/timing were inconsistent and sometimes unappetizing. There are also management and cleanliness concerns and the cost is high (about $6,500/month). I'd recommend it cautiously for compassionate, hands-on care - but verify staffing, meal quality and management first.

    About Burlingame Villa

Burlingame Villa sits in a quiet town with eucalyptus groves, a walkable downtown, parks, and nearby shopping, and this small, licensed community has cared for seniors for over 33 years with a reputation for friendly staff and a calm, home-like setting, so when you first walk in you might notice the courtyard gardens where visitors gather and residents take walks, and you'll see rooms that can be either private or shared, all furnished, some with wheelchair accessible showers, and all situated close to common rooms where folks can gather or join in on different onsite activities. The community specializes in memory care, with a purpose-built building for people living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, and they use technology like alarmed bracelets to help keep residents safe from wandering, plus offer behavioral care for those who get confused or act out, including accepting those at elopement risk or showing difficult behaviors. The place is fully wheelchair accessible with lifts for transfers, non-ambulatory care, and help with daily needs like bathing, grooming, or reminders to use the restroom, and the staff, including nurses on duty all day and a doctor on call, provide medication management, diabetic care like insulin injections and blood sugar checks, and incontinence support for both bladder and bowel issues.

Meals come prepared and cater to different dietary needs-there are vegetarian options, and people say the food tastes good and feels healthy-plus there's a nutrition-focused dining program, scheduled devotional services, and help from visiting therapists and nurses when required. Seniors can stay here as their needs change with light, medium, and heavy care, aging-in-place support, hospice, and palliative care as needed, and the community also offers respite stays if needed for short-term care. There's a focus on care for both the body and mind, so people with different levels of cognitive or physical challenges get what they need, including memory support that ranges from help with mild memory problems to advanced dementia.

Staff at Burlingame Villa have worked here for many years and know how to support both residents and their families through hard transitions, and there's always supervision along with reminders for things like personal care or medications, so people aren't left to manage alone. Smaller dogs might be allowed, and residents can enjoy on-site beautician services, rehabilitation help, transportation at cost, and access to outside resources through links and a health library. The property is a free-standing building with secure perimeters to prevent unsafe wandering, and all rooms are paid with all utilities except phones included in the cost, plus there's weekly housekeeping and groundskeeping, so the surroundings stay clean and comfortable.

Families often comment on the caring, respectful atmosphere, and the way staff try to honor each resident's dignity, while keeping the focus on warmth and daily human interaction more than on fancy amenities, although the Villa does offer community enrichment programs, transportation and parking, all-day emergency services, and regular activities to help people feel engaged. With room for up to 27 residents, Burlingame Villa offers a more personal and close-knit environment than many larger communities, and has received recognition as a Best of Senior Living community for its care. Residents with Alzheimer's or dementia, even those at risk for wandering or challenging behaviors, can find specialized memory support here in a setting designed to be safe, steady, and supportive as needs change with age.

    • § 9058
    09 Oct 2024
Determined four specific allegations were unsubstantiated: insufficient staff to meet residents’ needs; failure to observe physical changes; failure to seek timely medical attention; and failure to follow infection control plan. Interviews with the administrator, a resident’s responsible party, and a family member, along with records, indicated the resident appeared well during a visit and that PPE and infection-control measures were adequate.
    09 Oct 2024
