    Compassionate staff but dated facility

I placed my father here and overall the staff made the stay-attentive, caring, often Cantonese-speaking, proactive with admissions/updates, and strong on rehab/therapy. The small, older facility is serene with beautiful gardens and very good upkeep, accepts military/Medicare, and has skilled nursing and hospice on site. Rooms are mostly shared and feel sterile (no AC in patient rooms), common spaces were often closed during COVID, and activities exist (bingo, singing, outings) but residents can be bored. Food is Asian-influenced and accommodating at times but inconsistent and cafeteria-style; kitchen will work with simple requests. In short: great, compassionate team and cultural fit for Chinese speakers, but expect dated, small rooms and hit-or-miss dining-mixed overall.

    About Bellaken Garden

Bellaken Garden sits on a three-acre creek-side lot in Oakland, California, and has helped many seniors over the years feel comfortable and safe in a calm setting with plenty of trees and quiet paths where residents can walk or visit with friends and family, and you always see the rooms kept cozy and peaceful for privacy. Staff speak many languages, including English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Korean, Toisanese, and Vietnamese, which makes it easier for residents from different backgrounds to feel at home, and with a caring team around all hours, residents get help with medications, bathing, dressing, and other daily activities, and nurses are around for 12 to 16 hours each day, with a watchful eye always on site for supervision. With 101 beds set aside for skilled nursing and assisted living, and a separate 40-bed assisted living area, Bellaken Garden supports people who are mostly independent or those who need more care, including folks with dementia, Alzheimer's, or chronic health conditions, and it even provides hospice and respite care for families needing some extra support.

Meals are prepared by a professional chef who pays special attention to nutrition and any dietary needs, like meals for diabetics, and residents eat in bright, sunny rooms or can enjoy dining outside on the grounds when the weather's good. Housekeeping and linen services keep the place tidy and clean, and transportation makes it easy to get to doctor's appointments or go on outings. Bellaken Garden keeps a busy schedule with exercise classes, community events, birthday parties, intergenerational programs, movie nights, and family council meetings, giving residents plenty of chances to join in, and there's a full team to help new people settle in and take care of move-in details. The community runs a 24-hour call system in case someone needs help right away, and people can rest easy knowing someone's there if they need anything. Staff train in medical care and therapy like wound care, skin care, tube feeding, bowel and bladder support, diabetes management, counseling, and physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapies to help people restore skills or recover after an illness.

Folks say Bellaken Garden keeps a clean and well-maintained environment with a friendly administrative team, and the place often wins awards like Best of Senior Living 2025, with a review score of 7 out of 10 from residents and families, which shows it gets things right for many of the people living there. Whether someone only needs a little extra help or needs more support because of illness or memory loss, Bellaken Garden provides different levels of care and supervision to match those needs, focusing on helping everyone feel as much at home as possible in a safe and welcoming space.
