Barton House in Scottsdale, Arizona, is a memory care community designed for seniors with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, and what you notice first is how the staff and caregivers are always around, offering individualized care day and night, so someone's always there to help with things like bathing, dressing, or moving around, but also medication reminders or even help transfer from a wheelchair or bed if needed, and the staff is specially trained for dementia so they know how to help when someone is confused or having a hard day, and they've set things up with a secure courtyard, walkways, an enclosed garden, and flagpole outside so residents can spend time outdoors safely without worrying about wandering off, because wandering can be a real risk for folks with memory loss, but the building is secured and most everything, including the entrances and exits, is monitored closely, and some residents wear special bracelets for extra safety which is thoughtful. There are private studio rooms in this single-story, cozy place, with a homelike feel and plenty of room to spend time with others or visit family. People can bring their dogs or cats, and there's help for pet care too, which is nice because animals make a place feel like home. Residents get nutritious meals every day with restaurant-style dining, lots of choices including for special diets like vegan, low-salt, or gluten-free, guest meals if family visits, and even international dishes now and then. The care plans are all tailored to what each person needs and change as their needs do, whether that's light, medium, or heavier care, and those plans are straightforward with clear pricing, which helps families plan. Barton House is set up to help people with all the daily stuff-getting dressed, hygiene, eating, medications (even with diabetes-though not always sliding scale insulin), and special support for incontinence. There are also visiting health professionals from nurses to dentists to therapists and podiatrists, a nurse on staff, and a doctor on call when needed. The team runs different activities and programs all week-like art therapy, brain games, fitness classes, music therapy, devotional services, gardening, yoga, intergenerational meetings, pet-focused groups, karaoke, and even cooking, so residents have things to do and ways to stay active, and every activity's designed to keep minds and bodies as strong as possible for as long as possible. People can get their hair done at the on-site beauty salon, use the Wi-Fi, and move about in wheelchair accessible areas, and for those who are more social, there are shared dining rooms and community spaces. Barton House runs transport for medical visits and nearby outings, though that sometimes costs extra, which helps folks still connect with the wider community and go to parks or museums if they want, and there's parking if a resident or guest needs it. Staff monitor things around the clock and help keep a close eye on those at risk of wandering or behaviors that can be tough, and the whole place is built to reduce confusion-which helps a lot if memory troubles are a daily struggle. The executive director and care managers are said to be helpful and involved, and it all comes together to make Barton House a place where people with memory loss can feel secure, keep some independence, and live as active a life as they can, with support to match their needs as they change.
Highly recommended compassionate dementia care
I placed my wife at Barton House and couldn't be more grateful. It's privately owned, immaculately clean and homey with large private rooms and beautiful backyard patios. Staff are kind, attentive and highly trained in Alzheimer's/dementia care; management handled a very difficult case and communicated proactively. Four home-cooked meals are included, caregiver-to-resident ratio is excellent, and there are lots of therapies, activities and veterans/community support - affordable, trustworthy care. Minor drawback: weekend/after-hours response can be slower. I highly recommend Barton House.
