I toured and moved my father here - gorgeous, brand-new, hotel-like community with spotless grounds, elegant dining (linen, fine china, great cook), a movie theater, salon, gym, library and constant activities. The frontline staff and leadership are caring, attentive and hands-on; the memory-care neighborhood is separate and secure. It's expensive and there are occasional admin/medication or maintenance hiccups and turnover, but for safety, amenities and peace of mind it was worth it for us - long waitlist, but I'd recommend it.
Oakmont of Whittier sits on a green property with nice views at 13617 Whittier Blvd. in Whittier, California, and offers several levels of care for older adults, so people who want independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, or memory care can all find something that fits. There are private apartments, including studio spaces and two-bedroom layouts, and the grounds have gardens, walking paths, and spots to sit and look at the outdoors, which is kept up nicely. The memory care section uses a secure setting with trained staff who are always present, and there's an alert system if someone with dementia or Alzheimer's tries to leave, and the caregivers know how to help people with these memory conditions, plus the residents can go outside safely because the area is enclosed and watched.
For people who need help with daily needs, like dressing or bathing, the staff gives support around the clock, with a full-time nurse and a wellness center always available, and they try to offer personal help that follows each resident's specific routine and comfort. There's an executive chef and a culinary team who make the meals, and dining rooms are shown in the community's photos, with fresh and nutritious meals that many people seem to like, and the place has won awards for its food. The interior photos show things like the salon and a private movie theater, so residents have things to do without leaving the building, and there are group events and activities that help everyone stay social, whether they're in assisted living, memory care, or independent living.
Oakmont of Whittier runs as a luxury retirement community, but the main focus is making sure people feel at home, get good care, and have nice things to look at and do, with the staff putting in effort to be friendly and experienced, and you can tell a lot of planning went into the rooms and the outside areas so folks feel comfortable and safe.
